AI After 50 - Episode #3 - What AI Can Do, and the World is NOT Ready - The RISEN Framework for AI Prompting - Perplexity.ai

📍 📍 Hey there, Welcome to Episode #3 of AI After 50. This is the podcast for experienced professionals, ready to learn and develop practical AI skills.

I'm Mark Tennant, and if you're over 50, this is the podcast for you to become AI literate. confident and professionally indispensable.

The path to AI literacy, it begins right here with this podcast. What we do week after week, we understand the basics first, we evolve every day, and then we apply what we learn to the following week. And we continue to build on that.

And show notes. Don't forget about those. Every week we include the exercises and tips and things that we covered in that episode. But if you want to fast track your AI learning, you can subscribe to our premium show notes. And what those are, are extra exercises, extra tips, and a little bit more than what we go with here on the podcast.

It will accelerate your AI learning and it's absolutely free. The Premium Show Notes, and you can find the link, here in our show notes.

In Episode #2, last week, we talked about prompting and we got a little more involved. We added a role in some instructions last week.

This week with our prompting and our exercise.

We're going to go from here to here. I promise you, with your AI prompting training and now is the time. Now is the time to do it.

And the reason I say that, because last week we talked about AI literacy and adoption and how slow the rate of adoption and the literacy rate for AI here in the United States and really around the world.

I talk about this survey that AARP had last May of 2024 where they surveyed over a thousand professionals over 50 and they asked them if they've had any AI training at all? And only 7% of those surveyed said they had.

Folks, AI is going to be 'table stakes' here in 2025, certainly by the end of the year.

Now is the time to learn. You know, be that leader in your department, at work, in your business, in your industry. Future proof your job right now.

Because folks in businesses over 50 must address the pressing need for AI literacy.

And just this past week, the Trump administration hit the ground running with AI.

And they announced Stargate, which is a $500 billion plan to build an AI infrastructure here in the USA and address AI literacy. Now is the time to learn. And we provide that learning and training right here on the podcast.

And I wanted to start the podcast this week to talk a little more about Large Language Models, ChatGPT, and the other AI chat models that are out there. If they stop development today, and they stop, creating them.

If they stop all development and we just were stuck with what we have today, and that was it going forward, these models are still capable of natural language processing, meaning they can generate coherent text, translate languages, summarize content, and answer questions at about any level. any topic that's out there.

For data analysis, these models can identify patterns in complex data for businesses. And for example, AI data can greatly aid in medical research, which I was part of on the I. T. side, and it can produce better diagnoses through understandings of diseases and causes much faster than it's being done right now.

Creative tasks, they can generate articles, stories, produce descriptions, language understanding, it could also teach you a language, but it can perform tasks like spell checking, paraphrasing, and correction. And then , multimodal tasks, say that three times Some of these models can generate Images from text or voice prompts, and now studio like videos can be created with a simple text prompt.

Sora from OpenAI, who makes ChatGPT, and VideoFX from Google produce some of the most unbelievable videos with a simple text prompt that you will ever see. With these platforms, you're only limited by your imagination. So, right now, if development stopped and these models got no smarter, any smarter at all, this is where and what we're still capable of doing right now.

And for example, this past week, OpenAI, again, the makers of ChatGPT, introduced Operator. And this was the third week of January 2025. And it's a digital interface, it works in the cloud, so it's like a web browser in the cloud. You tell it to perform a task, and I saw it perform hotel reservations, flight reservations, concert tickets.

It all does this through a single interface does exactly the same thing you would do as a human with very little to no human interaction. That's how far we are.

It can go on the internet and perform tasks for you autonomously. And it's still early. Very, very early right now, but these models are getting better day by day.

So this is your call to urgency and this is your call to become AI literate.

Well, this week on the practical side, we've got a exercise, but I also wanted to talk about, and I may have mentioned this in previous episodes, perplexity. ai. This will be your new Google. Exactly like it sounds Perplexity.AI into any web browser.

You can talk to it. You can have a conversation with it on any topic on any subject. I use it for research before I go to ChatGPT.

For example, if I want to write or talk about AI, of course, in a video or an article or anything I'm trying to create a course, I use it for research.

And then I go to the large language models like ChatGPT, and then I use that research, feed it into ChatGPT, and it gives me my outline or whatever it is I'm needing from the information. And then from there, I can create what I need to create. And this is done. in just a few moments as opposed to planning this out all by hand.

Perplexity. ai. Use it for research. Do not use ChatGPT for research. It is used for so much more and so much smarter. Perplexity. ai is your research buddy and your new Google. Use it instead of Google. You will never go back, or at least I haven't went back.

All right, so this week our advanced prompting lesson.

I promised going from here to here. So let's do that last week We built upon that where we talked about role and gave the AI some instructions with a simple prompt and it did pretty well.

Especially from week one when we just gave it a simple task to do this week. We're going to start talking about prompting frameworks in other words something you can build upon and use as an outline or template, if you will, for every prompt that you need.

I teach this particular framework at all of my AI basic workshops. It is called the RISEN framework. It was developed by a gentleman by the name of Kyle Balmer.

He lives over in the UK and it provides a really good solid foundation for the attendees of my workshops.

It increases their knowledge and confidence. in working with these AI models, and I think it will do the same for you.

So, the acronym is RISEN, R I S E N. R is for Role, more specific focus, we did that last week. I is for Instructions, which we also did last week, telling you what to do, write a blog article, create or summarize something, write some code, create an image, create a video, the instruction.

The S is for Steps, we can give it specific steps to follow, like create a attention grabbing headline for an article, Or an intriguing short first sentence of that article.

E is for End Goal. So what's the desired result? Maybe an article geared towards your audience or customers on a new product line or description.

Maybe you want to freshen up the copy of your website. You want there to be an end goal. That's the E part.

And N is for Narrowing. You narrow the focus. Constraints, fine tuning of the prompt. You set limitations.

You can tell it no more than four paragraphs or write approximately 1500 words Narrowing makes the RISEN framework more adaptable to both technical and creative folks Because you're offering greater control over the output from the AI, so, the RISEN Framework, R I S E N.

So our prompt for the week and you are definitely going to want to look at the show notes on this because You can copy this and work with it all week and make it your own, you know, create your own examples with this.

But this is the prompt we came up with using the RISEN framework for this week.

So we're going to tell the AI to act as a product manager for ABC home greenhouses. I made that up. A leading manufacturer of residential greenhouses. So the instructions are to write a blog article announcing the new ABC home greenhouses.

Home greenhouse model designed for year round growing in compact spaces.

The article should target homeowners interested in sustainable living and growing their own food.

The Steps portion of the prompt, write an attention grabbing headline about sustainable home growing. Open with a compelling first sentence about food self sufficiency.

include three concise paragraphs or covering key features and innovations, value proposition, and ROI for homegrowing. And then finally end with a clear call to action for pre orders.

Now the End Goal. generate pre launch excitement and content and inquiries from target customers, and Narrowing the focus, you can say, keep language clear and factual, avoid marketing buzzwords.

So there you go. The Risen Framework.

Take this prompt, upload it to ChatGPT, and you'll be amazed at what it writes.

This is what structuring your prompts will do for you. This will get the most out of the AI. And again, take this framework, the RISEN framework, make it your own and just. start creating, start using, start working with these models using that type of framework.

If you subscribe to the Premium Show Notes, we're also going to include a couple of more frameworks we work with, and that we teach in our advanced workshops that I think you'll find helpful as well.

Subscribe to those in the show notes of this episode.

Success with AI, you know, it comes down to finding that sweet spot between the capabilities and the complexity.

and human expertise. So AI capabilities and human expertise, we never want to take the human out of the equation.

I say it every single week and I'll say it again. Now is the time to get started in learning AI, how to use it both professionally and personally. 2025 will be your last opportunity, in my opinion, to get ahead of most people in your role. or your industry. So act now increase and accelerate your AI literacy.

Well, until next time, that's going to do it for this week.

thanks so much for listening. Keep prompting, keep learning, and please subscribe to this podcast, wherever you get your favorite podcasts and take care.

We'll talk to you next time.
